The History Of Paper Planes

31-Aug-22
The History Of Paper Planes Cover

I wrote this song in 2008. I had just learned to play the guitar. I was the Lead Vocalist / Rhythm Guitarist of a band named Unsure/Uncertain. We wanted the song to sound punk but had only acoustic guitars. We had no knowledge about distortion, electric guitars, or how a song is recorded, but this song turned out to be extremely sweet and indie.

As the band moved to more progressive sounds with the introduction to Porcupine Tree and Tool, we kind of forgot ‘Paper Planes’. We even got a new vocalist, cause my vocals were something that was holding the band back. However, the new vocalist wasn’t comfortable singing Paper Planes, so Paper Planes was ignored for the first time despite being one of our best compositions. As Unsure/Uncertain evolved and eventually faded due to discord between band members, I started a punk rock project named ‘Revolt For’ in 2013.

In 2014, I introduced all my songs to Edlyn Dcruz, and she loved all my songs. She kept rooting for ‘Paper Planes’ and ‘Why Me’. So she’s one of the biggest reasons why I picked up Paper Planes again, 6 years later. With ‘Revolt For’ I revamped the structure of ‘Paper Planes’ quite a lot. Added a chorus, and changed half the lyrics. Rewrote the entire drop and outro and transformed ‘Paper Planes’ into the ‘Paper Planes’ it is now. ‘Revolt For’ died as well due to the Royalty Distribution conflict. Something we should have discussed before collaborating on the project, however, we were still learning about the Music Industry and its workings, so it was an honest mistake.

Finally, in 2016, I started my third project, and this time, I went Solo. Named it Just Suddenly. This time I started with some acoustic indie songs. Finished the first EP Album, ‘From Me To You'. ‘Paper Planes’ was still in the bag.

In 2017, I decided to record Paper Planes and got my Ex-brother (Ex, because we don’t talk anymore) to compose the drums. He did a fantastic job. It took me two and a half years to finish my 2nd EP Album, ‘With Me? Without Me?’ And I think I did justice to the song this time, it was punk, it was fast, it retained only the intro tune composed by Vishwesh Shetty (Lead Guitarist of Unsure/Uncertain, 2007-2009), the rest was all revamped. Mitesh Mudras (Drummer of Unsure/Uncertain, 2007-2014) wasn’t as thrilled with how much I revised Paper Planes to the point that it sounded like a totally different song, but Paper Planes went through 12 years in the making, 2008-2020. And only one person gets the credit for keeping it alive, Edlyn Dcruz. Without her, neither would have Just Suddenly existed nor would I have been as happy as I am today.
