Murder mitten is an absolutely stunning song. The intensity in the vocals actually makes you feel the agony of the writers. The acoustic version released in their album ‘Phases’ was wonderfully produced as well. I had trouble understanding the story behind this song, and the song title was of no help clearing things up. Turns out the song is named such because the state of Michigan is shaped like a mitten, and it has a high murder rate. Thanks to songfacts.com for all the useful information. As for the lyrics and the story behind it, I inferred it to be a difficult relationship, one where the other person was unfair and did nothing to undo the wrong. One where the other person lost their mind, and finally left, leaving silence to all the love and pain the writer felt. That is all I could decipher, all the other lines were slightly complicated to connect the dots. However, after going through songfacts.com, it seems the song was about an alcoholic mom, and a broken home. I still can’t piece all the information to vicariously imagine the whole scenario. It could have been well written for the entire world to understand. But, I don’t think this song was written for the world, it was written for that one person, either a message or probably for the writers themselves, to deal with the emptiness the relationship left in them.
